Pharmacy attracts me because of its potential to alleviate people's physical and emotional suffering. The simple act of listening and being empathetic to the health and well-being concerns of others inspired me to learn more about the profession. Perseverance in college and then in the biotech industry gave me the research skills needed to succeed. The ever-evolving pharmaceutical field would allow me to continue my education, culminating in an exciting career. The importance of working hard and taking nothing for granted was much emphasized at home. This mentality motivated me to dedicate more time to studying and to do well in school. Reflecting on my college years, I was immediately intrigued by biology and chemistry courses. I was fascinated by the microbiology of bacterial, fungal, and parasitic pathogens and resulting infectious diseases. I look forward to learning more about these conditions and guiding patients through appropriate treatment regimens in the pharmacy field. My passion for science continued during graduate school in an environmental endocrinology and reproductive physiology laboratory. Before long, I found my niche as a lead researcher studying the effects of an industrial compound on spermatogenesis and steroidogenesis in rodent models. I completed my research with deep respect for the complex endocrine processes that interact with body systems to maintain homeostasis. I anticipate learning more about these processes from a pharmacological perspective in the future. After graduating, I began working for a biotechnology company specializing in female reproductive physiology. As part of a scientific team, I played an important role in the foundational stages of research and development…mid-thesis…undergraduate years. In addition to developing confidence and leadership skills, I was able to help my fellow students succeed. My time spent educating and helping other students locate and apply for scholarships has helped shape, change, and direct my life in service to humanity. As a scholarship recipient myself, I remember the thoughtful feeling when my mentor reached out to me and helped me through the process. My past has inspired me to pursue a career where I can make the most of my education, qualities and skills. Becoming a pharmacist is an extension of my genuine interest in the well-being of others. Through my academic, work and volunteer experiences, I have been able to interact with people of many different cultures and ages. I am confident that I will respond to future patients in an empathetic and respectful manner to achieve the quality of life they deserve.
