Gangs originated in the mid-1800s in the Cardinal Direction using it as a method of defending themselves from outsiders. The idea of gangs became populous, powerful, and had wide influence. But like all powers, they tend to corrupt and recognize violence as a way to get what they want faster than other methods. They turn violence into entertainment, profit and control. Creating a situation that affects young people in today's society. After the American Revolution in 1783 gangs began to emerge. In 1826, the Northeast Region was the first ever to have a well-organized gang formed in Rosana Peer's green grocery store in New York City. Soon after the migration of African Americans and Latinos, black gangs began to appear in the 1950s, as did the emergence of non-Puerto Rican Asian gangs in the 1980s. In the Midwest region of Chicago, white immigrants developed street gangs including Irish, Germans, and Lithuanians to terrorize African-American communities, turning into a race riot. Mexican-American gangs soon became popular in the 1950s. In the 1970s, street gangs emerged in working-class areas of California. In the 1980s, gangs began dealing and consuming crack cocaine. The southern region had no gang-like activity, only Miami and San Antonio in 1980. According to statistics, the city's criminal street gangs have a total of 65,271 members with an increase of 242 in March 1998. About 34 % of deaths between 2010 and 2011 and a total of 32,000 gun deaths per year in the United States. About 60% are suicides and 80% are homicides (gun-related) because half of American citizens own a gun.
