Same-sex relationships should not be allowedIn recent reports there has been a growing interest in same-sex couples within Australian society . At both state and commonwealth levels there has been the removal of most legal distinctions between same-sex and heterosexual couples. The changing face of relationships in contemporary society and the continuing expansion of human rights laws have led to attempts to recognize and regulate relationships in a broader context than traditional marriage. (Lusk, 2009:284) Although tentative legislation has emerged over the last decade, the Australian federal government has provided same-sex couples and children with a wide range of Commonwealth laws. (Lusk, 2009:284). The essay will discuss the changing nature of legislation for same-sex couples, the remaining limitations same-sex couples face compared to heterosexual couples and, supporting recommendations as to why same-sex relationships should not be recognized in Australia. The government's single-sex law reform package was passed by parliament on 26 and 27 November 2008. (Healey, 2013:1). The reforms amended 84 Commonwealth laws on discrimination against same-sex couples in a wide range of areas including taxation, superannuation, social security, family assistance, Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme Safety Net, Medicare, aged care, veterans' rights, immigration, citizenship, child support. and family law. These reforms were initiated on 1 July 2009 (Healey, 2013:1). The 84 removed Commonwealth laws help same-sex couples and their families receive benefits that were previously unaffordable.
