Previews of the movie Remember Me make you assume that you will once again watch a romantic drama, whose two main characters Tyler (Robert Pattinson) and Ally (Emilie de Ravin) they fall in love, with some twists and turns and eventually live happily ever after. Instead, we are faced with two incredibly complicated characters whose lives unfold throughout the story. This film touches on the dynamics of grief and the loss of a loved one and how it affects every aspect of interpersonal relationships. It affirms the pain of our nation, personalizing the history and tragedy of 9/11, as well as being a great tribute to those who died that day and all those who loved them. Tyler's character is an angry and confused 21-year-old who also smokes. a lot, drinks too much and has no real plan for his future. The suicide of his older brother Michael turned his world upside down; he blames his father's death by projecting all his anger and guilt onto him. According to Mental Health America, loss due to suicide can be the most difficult type of loss. Surviving family members experience feelings of guilt and anger over their loss. However, when pain becomes the center of the survivor's life; it becomes a complicated grief, which is often experienced after a loss such as suicide. Complicated grief is like being stuck in an intense state of grief, having difficulty accepting the death long after it has occurred, and being so overwhelmed by the death that you can't live your life, the grief undermines other relationships. (America, 2011) When a family member dies, it forces the family to restructure and redefine itself.
