Topic > Romeo and Juliet Analysis of Light and Darkness - 717

Light is always followed by darkness but for two star-crossed lovers the darkness comes too soon. Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare is a tragic play that explores many dimensions of adolescent love. Romeo and Juliet's love is ill-fated, but these two try to defy all odds. Throughout the play Shakespeare hints at their tragic outcome. We also constantly see Juliet comparing good to evil when confronted with pain. Finally, adolescents' ignorance of decision making is highlighted through their actions. Shakespeare uses light and darkness as a motif to convey the theme that people cannot escape the inevitability of their fate. While Romeo sleeps he is visited by a special guest. This visitor is Queen Mab and she leaves an untimely death message for Romeo in his dreams. Shakespeare elaborately describes Queen Mab as a little fairy who visits people in their sleep and leaves them a message seen through a dream. Romeo dreams that he will suffer an early death if he goes to the Capulets' party. Romeo is easily convinced by Benvolio and Mercutio to go to the party partially because he is in an exaggerated depression since he cannot be with Rosaline. Even though he is most likely already contemplating death, we can see that he is still troubled by his dream. “I am afraid too soon, for my mind fears/Some consequence still hangs among the stars/It will bitterly begin its terrible rendezvous/With this night's festivities, and the term will expire/Of a despised life locked in my chest/With some vile renunciation to untimely Death./But he who governs my course,/Steers my sail. Forward, vigorous gentlemen.” (Act i.iv.107-114). Romeo talks about the night bringing something bad, this thought is an example of how Shakespeare associates the......middle of paper......ce of adolescent decision making. Tragically Romeo manages to carry out his plan and kill himself unaware that Juliet is still alive and under a potion. Juliet wakes to find that Romeo is dead and decides that she too should join Romeo in the darkness. Throughout the play Shakespeare foreshadows the conclusion numerous times by adding clues as to what will happen next. Furthermore, in moments of desperation, Juliet constantly resorts to comparing good and evil. Finally, adolescent decision making is truly perceived as ignorant. On the other hand, the tragic fate of Romeo and Juliet managed to put an end to a feud that had divided two families for several generations. The theme that people cannot escape their fate is shown through the light and dark motif. Although Romeo and Juliet entered the darkness together, they will now spend eternity in the light.
