Historically, minorities have found themselves humiliated and oppressed by a stronger majority. The literature documented the minority struggle and focused on individuals who overcome oppression and succeed. The film, The North Country, shows the problems between new female workers and established men in a Minnesota mine. World Champion, depicts the fight of the black heavyweight boxer, Joe Louis, who represents his race in a battle for equality. The story, Fish Cheeks, portrays a little girl's encounter with her culture and the imposing forces of conformity. Minorities often struggle under an oppressive majority; however, with courage and pride, you can make a difference for all the people harmed by the majority. The United States has a history of conflict between minorities and majorities. African Americans were enslaved, segregated, and harassed for more than a century while living in America. Consequently, when Joe Louis fought to defend his championship belt from a white boxer in the 1930s; has captured the attention of the entire world. Segregation dominated Southern society, and African Americans faced constant reminders of their “inferiority.” In the story World Champion, Maya Angelou portrays a large group of African Americans standing in a local pharmacy as they listen together to the match between Joe Louis and the white contender. The group shares more than a common skin color, they share a common experience. They have faced oppression for years, but now they are united by a sense of hope. Louis fights for the entire African American race and his pain is the pain of everyone who listens and watches the game. The narrator of the story shows the relationship that... in the middle of the card... the pride of the black people created a time of hope and happiness for that race. Additionally, Amy embraced her heritage when she realized that being different wasn't a bad thing, but rather something to be proud of. Ultimately, Josey's determination to obtain justice allowed her to create an environment in which the female minority received protection from the violent male majority. These three characters represent the power a person has to create beneficial change and end injustice. Furthermore, the three characters understand that pride exists in being different, and this difference should be embraced and not persecuted. In such a diverse world, people fail to appreciate each other's differences and instead look for similarities. Minorities should continue to protect and fight for the rights that self-indulgent majorities abuse.
