The movie Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy is set in the 1970s. It depicts the highly male broadcast team and shows the shock when a woman is hired as a reporter and aspires to become an anchor of the television station. The particular scene shows Ron Burgundy agitated because Veronica Coringstone is hindering his masculinity. Burgundy exemplifies hegemonic masculinity by explaining that he is a man and a professional, when Coringstone says that he acts like a child he gets offended and explains that he is a man and ultimately better than a woman because he is in fact a man. Burgundy states: “'I am a man who discovered the wheel and built the Eiffel Tower with metal and muscle. That's the kind of man I am. You're just a woman with a small brain. With a brain 1/3 the size of us... It's science (Robertson, McKay, 2004). The clip also describes Burgundy's desire for Coringstone to be the typical submissive woman he is used to. The articles will identify gender stereotypes and access whether they are true or false based on the research. The first study looks at different types of masculinities and how hegemonic masculinities relate to hierarchical masculinities. The researchers observed male students' attitudes toward male dominance, such as power and violence. They further examine Connell's social theory of gender by examining two different schools and studying relationships between boys (Lusher, Robins, 2010). This theory is widely used to explain hierarchical behavior in the use of male power, such as complicit, dominant, and subordinate masculinity (Lusher, Robins, 2010). Their methods involved studying the schools, which are religious, based and are all boys schools… middle of paper… women who see no problem with a man not responding to them. Research shows the movie scene to find the truth in gender stereotypes. Research shows that boys can demonstrate hegemonic masculinity and general forms of male dominance. This is shown accurately in the footage. Furthermore, the second study provides evidence that women may feel submissive or lacking in confidence in an invaded male environment. Research suggests this could have implications for performance in the workplace. Her lack of self-confidence or doubts after the scene are also described in the film, which is in line with the research. Both forms of research had different approaches and methods. However, due to some weaknesses in their studies, more research on stereotypes is needed to provide greater validity to the truth of stereotypes..
