Animal testing is the use of non-human animals in experiments. Animal testing, also known as animal experimentation, had become established by the 2nd century AD. A Roman doctor, named Galen, began performing endless experiments on animals. (Safer medicines.) On the other hand, the first major experiments on animals occurred in the nineteenth century. Luis Pasteur administered anthrax to sheep. Anthrax is a bacterial disease that affects the skin and lungs in sheep and cattle, so Pasteur was responsible for this bacterial disease in these animals. Another man known as Ivan Pavlov conducted experiments on dogs and tested how their memory works with repetitive tasks. (Murnaghan)In 1922 there was a breakthrough in animal experiments. Animal testing was now permitted to perform kidney dialysis and “life-saving” treatments on animals. Primate laboratories were now built to perform animal testing in a completely new and diverse way. Animals were often given drugs as powerful as cancer to see how they reacted and to see what was similar and different about how they reacted compared to humans. (Murnaghan)In 1996 many doctors attempted to clone sheep. However, you would think that animal testing would have stopped with its many unsolved treatments. Unfortunately, animal testing continued and reached its peak in the 1980s. They only started testing cosmetics on animals when a woman had an accident while using mascara, the mascara went “wrong” and she ended up blind. (Murnaghan) The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has passed a law “The Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act”. This allowed doctors to test cosmetics on animals. Unfortunately, animal testing, also known as animal testing, c...... middle of paper...... many? Every day you can make a difference for the animals that are currently suffering in laboratories, millions of animals are poisoned and killed for products such as lipsticks, deodorants, soap and toothpaste, etc. One of the many ways you can help is by shopping cruelty-free, look for rabbit logos on the products you buy. Another way is to participate in campaigns against animal testing and donate money. Also adopt animals and give them a loving home.
