Cuba. The world-famous island located ninety miles south of Florida is the largest island in the West Indies. The island is famous for its natural beauty and cultural heritage. After the Cuban revolution in the 1950s, the Batista regime was overthrown and a new government led by Fidel Castro was formed. Since then Cuba has been ruled by Fidel Castro until recently. In 2008, due to Fidel Castro's illness, his brother Raúl Castro replaced him. Many Cubans supported the Cuban Revolution in hopes of seeing changes in Cuba; however, after Castro took power in 1959, many left Cuba to find a better life and live free from the communist government in Cuba. OUTSIDE CUBA, a travel memoir, is a story written by Regina Anavy and in the book she shares your experiences while you visited Cuba several times as a tourist. He first illegally visits Cuba to cut sugar cane in 1971 in support of Fidel Castro's ten million ton sugar crop. However, as he returned to the United States, he quickly realized and appreciated the freedoms that people in the United States enjoy. After thirty years he returns to Cuba again, but this time as a tourist. There he meets the guide named Theseus. He gets closer to Theseus and begins to appreciate his courage. When she discovers that Theseus is desperate to leave the island and move to another country for his family's bright future, Anavy promises to help him. Most of the book's chapters are written based on conversations between her and Teseo that occurred during her visit to Cuba. What I learned about Cuba by going to Cuba is a book about what the author learned about Cuba by returning to her homeland . Cuba after thirty-five years and this book on......middle of paper......the navy in its book writes that on television there were commercials for the Revolution instead of product commercials. There were placards with the slogan “We will win, socialism or death”. People on the street asked for soap because Cubans only received a bar of laundry soap every two months (Anavy 44). In the chapter The Possibility of Negotiations and Dialogue, Zamora talks about the most successful talks between the United States and Cuba. The first was that President John F. Kennedy accepted responsibility for the Bay of Pigs invasion and negotiations ultimately led to the release of the Bay of Pigs Invaders (Zamora 96). Both Anavy's and Zamora's books present detailed information about Cuba. However, Anavy's book is more interesting to read because it highlights the situation of Cuba by presenting the story of the Cuban person.
