Topic > The emancipation of Japanese women, through strength...

In the media of popular culture, the portrayal of women has often been controversial, due to the use of their gender and attitudes towards them. In most anime themes, women have been drawn for their sensuality and sexual attachments. Their role was to be dominated by their male counterparts. It has reinforced the stereotypical role of women which is the passive and sensitive role. Why is popular culture important? It influences people's thoughts and shapes their attitudes and behaviors. During the late 20th century, Japan experienced the rise of feminist movements that wished to change women's historical narratives. How did Japanese women gain power? The article will demonstrate that the emancipation of Japanese women changed their representation within anime films during the late 20th century. Specifically, the female characters of Ghost in Shell, Princess Mononoke, Naussicaa of the Valley of the Wind and Patlabor will be analyzed. The reasoning behind these chosen films is that each of them has a strong female character that has many differences and similarities when compared to each other. Furthermore, they were made over a ten-year period, between the mid-1980s and the mid-1990s. Structurally, the document is divided into three sections: Japanese women's empowerment, strong female characters, and women's identity. The first section will present the rise of the feminist movement in Japan and explain its historical context. The second section examines the development of strong female characters and how they contribute to the emancipation of Japanese women, through the analysis of the four films mentioned. Finally, the third…half of the document…later, the identity of Japanese women within popular culture would transform with the emancipation of Japanese women. They create a new type of identity, “female masculinity,” which reinforces the reversal of gender roles and the alternative world that comes with it. In a patriarchal society, characters should be able to influence and inspire the audience to gain confidence and challenge the status quo. From another point of view, gender is a type of social construction insofar as they needed the feminine side of masculinity to have a balanced world and to explain it. However, there will always be a thin line between the ideal and reality because films should represent the ideal alternative to the world to solve social issues that are not discussed directly. Reality should simply be influenced by it and understand society's problems.
