Topic > Writer Analysis: Devin Friedman - 731

Devin Friedman is a creative storyteller who incorporates thoughtful details into his writing, which makes readers feel like they're part of the adventure. Devin attended the University of Michigan and was honored as the winner of the Hopwood Contest. This competition was hosted by the university committee that appoints expert judges and by the Ann Arbor community to select winners in several writing divisions. In recent years, Devin has written for numerous publications such as The Best American Crime Writing, The Best American Travel Writing, The New York Times Magazine, Rolling Stone, The New Yorker, Esquire, People's Stories, and GQ. Among the many articles Friedman has written in the past, "The Best Night $500,000 Can Buy," "Famous People: James Franco," and "The Unbearable Awkwardness of Being" are the ones I chose to read because of the 'interesting topic. issues and different writing styles. The first article, “The Best Night $500,000 Can Buy,” portrays the perfect evening in Las Vegas. Devin chronologically takes the reader through a night at one of Las Vegas' famous clubs, the Marquee. She describes the key marketing techniques promoters use to lure women into the club, the prices high rollers pay to get VIP access and tables, and the "shitshow" atmosphere in which people dance as if under the influence of ecstasy (some people are actually addicts). From personal experience, Las Vegas is definitely the Disney world for adults because people can freely consume alcoholic beverages on Fremont Street while enjoying themselves in the arcades, night and day clubs, swimming pools, card rooms, amusement park rides theme, in shopping malls, restaurants, strip clubs and wedding chapels. What ultimately leaves… middle of the paper… open to new ideas is most likely why James Franco is so successful today. Devin Friedman is an interesting writer to analyze because his personable tone with a hint of sarcasm that makes all articles entertaining. It's also refreshing to see someone who isn't afraid to talk about controversial topics like racism and bisexuality, but knows how to maintain a professional attitude towards them. Although Devin has written many articles covering travel, crime and lifestyle, I wonder if he would ever write a review about food. I think it would be interesting to read an article about food written by Devin Friedman because he doesn't seem like the type of person who is afraid to tell the truth (with a hint of sarcasm). Any person can write a story, but it's hard to find a witty person who can capture the moment within the story like Devin Friedman.
