"Modern English, especially written English, is full of bad habits which spread by imitation and which can be avoided if one is willing to take the necessary trouble." This phrase, created by American author George Orwell, highlights the idea that language has become less and less honest around the world. Among other languages, English is extremely complex. Filled with metaphors, different words with the same meaning, and strong diction, it's easy to get caught up in glittering generalities. Language has the ability to convey ideas effectively; over the decades, however, it has been used by powerful figures to belittle citizens and get them to do whatever the leader wants. According to Orwell, language has the ability not only to express but also to hide ideas. Politicians manipulate language daily to hide the truth, and professors, teachers and journalists must stop encouraging their speeches and words in front of the people. Professors and teachers tend to show students examples of politicians' speeches and praise their ideas, even though they are often one-sided and tend to make little sense. Journalists report on the ideas of these politicians and even use language to corrupt their readers into thinking a certain way. To develop and convey the connection between language and thought to his audience, Orwell uses antimetaboles, hyperboles, and similes. Orwell uses figurative language in the form of simile to open his argument, thus hooking the audience to his main idea. He states: “Our civilization is decadent and our language – so it is argued – must inevitably participate in the general collapse. It follows that every fight against the abuse of language is a sentimental archaism, like preferring candles... middle of paper... mice attack republicans with unfair terms and words. Even journalists do it by right; instead of speaking for themselves, they report the speeches of a politician or other public figure and distort them in such a way that the public hates or falls in love with the argument made by the public figure, not the journalist. Citizens are treated as if they have no brains; those in power expect us to believe everything that comes out of their mouths. How is this fair? It is no different to Britain treating the colonists unfairly and expecting them to carry out every act they pass simply because they have technical representation in Parliament through another British politician. Americans are not sheep, nor are they stupid. Therefore, citizens must, starting from the grassroots, prevent those in power from treating them in this way.
