Topic > The character Blanche Dubois in A Streetcar Named Desire

In “A Streetcar Named Desire”, the protagonist Blanche Dubois displays behavior similar to that of paranoia. The question that needs to be answered is why. Blanche is a character who has resorted to many factors to ease her mental pain. Blanch uses denial as a coping mechanism that ultimately makes her fear abandonment and pressure from past conflicts. Denial is one of the ways that helped Blanche deal with her stress, putting her in a frame of mind to perhaps escape her life. problems or reality itself. He also experienced the behavior of his alcohol addiction. In a setting where someone psychoanalyzes Blanche's condition, the reader or viewer must first understand the entire situation. Referring to Sigmund Freud's theory, “psychoanalysis is the technique of helping a person with emotional problems based on the unconscious mind” (Lahey 9). Therefore, analyzing Sigmund Freud's theory for Blanche, it seems that she has an innate reason that drives her to have these illusions and false notions. Blanche suffers from past experiences starting with the loss of her husband, the loss of Belle Reve, and the loss of her job as a literature teacher in Laurel which brought about a downfall in her life. Throughout the play she tries to avoid guilt by engaging in sexual activities with strangers, constantly trying to avoid the truth, seeking validation needs in how she is perceived in her outward appearance, and even creating her own personal reality where everything is perfect. “This manifests itself in several ways in Streetcar, primarily in Blanche's refusal to face certain acts from her past and the present reality of her sexual urges that she hides with such words... middle of paper ......ng, “Whoever you are, I have always depended on the kindness of strangers” (Williams 102). Consequently, we see that Blanche's aim is primarily to find stability from her past fears of abandonment and security from the mental bottling affects that have taken a toll on her life. All the illusions, misconceptions and alcoholism were supposed to help Blanche deal with her desire to escape the reality of her life. These different mechanisms were Blanche's ideal way to deal with the stress and increasing tension during her stay at her sister's house. These were his ways of dealing with unpleasant situations and living in a fantasy world and his way of surviving. “Blanche was not only detached from reality, but her romantic way of seeing things, however sensitive, has a fatal weakness: it exists only by ignoring only certain portions of reality” (Student Drama 10).
