Topic > Power and Control - 609

The people in this country have been ingrained with the idea that they have power and the ability to govern themselves for an exceptional life. This fire burns in the minds of governments, corporations, common men and in this case of what is considered the lowest class: African Americans. In a country where there is a constant struggle for racial equality, whether in an urban or rural setting, race dictates power for characters like Emmett Till in “The Ballad of Emmet Till,” Bob Dylan, Tom Robinson in To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, and Mama in A Raisin In The Sun, by Lorraine Hansberry. All of these characters vary in how they are haunted, but are linked by their struggle. It describes the idea that there is a constant battle to control one's life. Bob Dylan illustrates a genuine idea of a lack of power or control in “The Ballad of Emmett Till.” “The reason they killed him there, and I'm sure it's not a lie, was just for the fun of killing him and watching him die slowly. (Because he was born a black-skinned boy, he was born to die.)” (11-12). Bob Dylan portrays the simple concept perceived by white people. The phrase "he was born to die" says that the purpose of his life was to be raised like an animal for slaughter. In the time of depression, inequality and movement, people's brains were imprisoned with the vision that some had no future. Creating a sort of vacuum-like effect that takes power away from those who need it most. This too can be noted to this day; whether it's a government, a corporation, or a single person taking power away from another. When one person takes power from another, it's considered bullying, but when it starts to involve their race, it becomes something more. This can be seen in the T...... message in the center of the ......ng sheet. They leave ideas and real-world experiences to help us connect. Bob Dylan manages to express Emmet's inferiority in his ballad because he was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Both To Kill A Mockingbird and A Raisin In The Sun demonstrate the lack of power and control over one's life through the form of racial inequality. Tom was accused of a crime he didn't commit just because a white man's voice is more powerful. Mom was trying to get her family out of the dump and the laws just cracked down on her. That's why there have been so many civil movements for equality. Work Cited Dylan, Bob. “The Ballad of Emmett Till.” bobdylan.com and Web. April 3, 2014Lee, Harper. To Kill a Mockingbird.
