Being hypothermic or having frostbite on any part of the body can be very dangerous. This is an interesting topic because it can happen to anyone at any time and if you are not prepared, it can be life-threatening. If you're simply going to play in the snow and you're not dressed warm enough or all of your skin isn't covered, frostbite can develop and you're at risk for hypothermia. Even if it's not snowing and there isn't a cloud in the sky, you can develop hypothermia if it's cold enough. If you plan on hiking or skiing, you will want to be aware of what hypothermia is and what to do if you get frostbite as this can result in amputation of limbs and fingers. While skiing in Vermont over the Christmas holidays as I went down the mountain, my fingers started to hurt and were very cold. My father and I were descending to the base of the mountain, it was our last run of the day. We were skiing in negative 20 degree weather. This sparked my interest in hypothermia and frostbite because if we hadn't decided to come down the mountain I would have developed frostbite on my hands and fingers and would have been in danger of having them amputated. The purpose of writing this article is to show how dangerous and deadly hypothermia and frostbite are if not treated properly. Frostbite occurs when the body's survival mechanism kicks in during extremely cold weather. Your body reduces circulation from extremities such as your hands, feet, and nose to keep vital organs and the inside of your body warm. When these parts of the body are exposed to cold, they receive less warm blood and eventually freeze. First-degree frostbite occurs when ice crystals begin to form on the skin. Second-degree frostbite occurs when skis… center of paper… warming protect any affected part of the body from direct pressure and ensure the patient is well hydrated. Do not rub frozen skin, do not attempt to warm it using a fire or stove, rewarm it if there is a possibility of refreezing, and allow the tissue to refreeze if it has been successfully thawed (Simon, Bryan). Be hypothermic or have frostbite on any part of the skin. your body can be very dangerous. It is very easy to get caught off guard and not be prepared for the effects on the body caused by hypothermia and frostbite. If not handled correctly you could suffer limb amputation or even death. The statements made in this article have told us how to treat and prevent hypothermia. They also explained to us how to be wary of frostbite and the damage it can cause to our bodies. Be aware of hypothermia and frostbite wherever you go and never get caught by surprise and unprepared.
