Renting vs. Buying: The DebateSome individuals may believe that purchasing a home is part of the American dream and that renting an apartment is not comparable, but satisfied renters would not be d 'agreement. Although owning a home offers a sense of security and allows for unauthorized modifications, renting is more often preferred to buying because the costs of upgrades, monthly payments combined with utilities, and paying insurance on a home have a high price. A homeowner has several luxuries such as making lasting friendships with neighbors, making landscaping changes to their yard, and painting and designing their home. While this remains true, renting an apartment offers several options and amenities that are just as convenient as buying a home. Apartment complexes have started to transform into small communities where they can enjoy several luxuries including indoor pools, game rooms, weight rooms, personal amenities. trainers, security systems and covered parking along with dozens of other options to choose from according to the National Multi Housing Council (Council, 2011). Since a homeowner would have to spend thousands of dollars to obtain these items, having such amenities available in an apartment has become a better option than purchasing a home. Homeowners often have more living space in their home, and this can be a major advantage over renting an apartment. The National Housing Council said that “larger apartments combined with new designs, conveniences and amenities are revolutionizing apartment living.” (Consiglio, 2011) This suggests that apartments are being designed to allow more space for renters, while including and adding amenities that were not available in the past…half of paper…the only way to live a happy and fulfilling life or live the American dream. Renting an apartment has become one of the best ways to save money, bond with a small community of people, and have the luxury of amenities that the average family otherwise couldn't afford.
