According to chapter 9 of Outliers, "Marita's Deal", Gladwell introduces a public school called KIPP Academy. Students are chosen by lottery. Half of the students are African American, the rest are Hispanic. However, at KIPP, the teaching methods are different from those of other US schools. KIPP students spend almost every second studying. Their students spend fifty to sixty percent more time learning than the traditional public school student. This is why at KIPP even poor kids can be as smart as rich kids. According to Gladwell, the reason Asian students are smarter in math is because they don't have as long summer vacations. Asian culture believes that “the path to success lies in getting up before dawn for 260 days a year that is unlikely to give your children three consecutive months off in the summer” (260). Therefore, the school year in Asia lasts almost 243 days. They believe that people have the time to learn everything they need rather than sitting there and unlearning it. However, in the US education system, students have 180 days of summer vacation. Gladwell believes that length of study is why Asian students succeed in mathematics. In my opinion, increasing study hours is the fastest way to create a gap between students who study. In Stand and Deliver, in order to improve students' mathematical skills in a short time, Escalante spends more time teaching students all the
