Concussions are a problem. They have been around for a long time and people were aware of them, but they were not aware of the damage that can happen. Since the dawn of the game of football, there have been people who "rang the bell". We have recently begun to understand the severity of football-related head injuries, such as concussions. A group of more than 4,400 retired NFL players have agreed to a $765 million out-of-court settlement with the National Football League — a case in which players claimed they suffered concussions under NFL watch during their playing careers. Independent doctors and administrators of mutually agreed funds are expected to assess who in the group is actually eligible to receive part of the settlement. When all the numbers are finalized and the deal begins to be paid to former players, 50% will be received over the first three years and the rest will be distributed over the next 17 years (Heitner). The NFL has not helped its former players at all, in fact, they have avoided providing such assistance. In a way, the NFL's attitude towards former players could be described as "Delay, deny and hope they die (Dwyre). The blame should be placed on the NFL, for not wanting to help keep their exes healthy players once they reach the ages of 35 and 40. And some of the blame, perhaps more than half, should be placed squarely on the shoulders of the players NFL Players' Association, which barely recognizes the rights of its players However, none of this should justify the NFL fighting the recent concussion lawsuit filed by former players. For starters, none of the players knew what a concussion was when it ended... mid-card as soon as they could get it, because of the cost of treatment. If the NFL helped its former players in other ways, the situation would be very different. Instead, they are giving as little help as possible. In one of the largest and most popular businesses in the sports industry, everyone is following the path of least resistance. The NFL and NFLPA continue to try to ignore the findings of concussions on players even though more evidence has been found against these claims. Go ahead, NFL, keep showing us how cool you are. Give it a few years; you will no longer be able to deny it. Players should get better support and whether you agree to help or not, sooner or later there will be trials and it will no longer be your choice to make. Stop bullying your players, give them the help they deserve, the time is now.
