The Trust Gap in “My Generation” A trust gap between every generational group has existed for countless generations. While it is more common to see a lack of trust in younger generations from older generations, the trust gap can work both ways. The song “My Generation”, by The Who, highlights the lack of trust towards young people. The lyrics of the song describe the problems of a young adult trying to establish himself in the world. The lyrics of the song explain that the young adult was pushed down. From the lyrics it can be deduced that a person has been humiliated by someone from an older generation because the artists sing about not wanting to grow old. Despite being written more than 40 years ago, the theme of trust gaps is arguably more prevalent today than when the song was originally released. The song "My Generation" by The Who expresses how young people in society past and present are making progress in the world and learning to use their voices, but older generations push young people down and fail to see the value in future generation .To explain how the trust gap begins, you need to know that people are grouped into generational groups. In today's world, the groups in conflict with each other are Millennials, or Generation Y, and Generation X, otherwise known as Gen-Xers. Millennials are people born between the years 1982 and 2004. Gen-Xers are people born between the years 1965 and 1981. Before Gen-Xers there is the Baby Boomer generation (Ellin). The term “generation gap” was coined in the 1990s as members of Generation X began to gain leadership in the world. At this time, Gen-Xers realized that the work completed by the generations before them required spiritual transformation (How...middle of paper...technology ceded, it is possible due to the generational trust gap) to put an end. This trust gap has existed for over fifty years, and has been recognized for over forty years in the song “My Generation,” by The Who. The lyrics of this song are written from the perspective of a member of the youth. In this way, the song criticizes the older generation of their condescending views towards the youth of the world. The author of the song emphasizes that young people are trying to stand up for what is right, but it is difficult to accept this position when world leaders push only against young people. This song was a powerful propaganda in expressing the problems of young people. Songs from different periods of world history are able to share their criticisms about society and it is fascinating when a song written in a previous generation still relates to today's society.
