The book “Before I Fall” is a book full of shifting tones. Sammy (the main character) has a major change in tone. The tone that the author gives to Sammy is changing; From the beginning to the end of the story there is a big difference in tone. The tone set helps create a more detailed perspective of the character. At the beginning of the book, the author portrayed Sammy as a very rude and ungrateful teenager. The tone that the author gave to Sammy was that of a very rude and popular girl. She was mean to everyone, she didn't care what words came out of her mouth, respectful or disrespectful. She was mean to Kent and thought he was creepy, she dated one of the popular kids, went to crazy parties, and has popular friends. He took things for granted and didn't realize that the little things he did or said affected other people the most. “We all turn around. Juliet Sykes, or Psycho,” (Oliver, 39). Sam doesn't know how he's affecting Juliet by calling her any name. Sammy doesn't care how Juliet feels. He thinks he's better than everyone else. “The point is, we can do things like this. Do you know why? Because we are popular. And we're popular because we can get away with anything.”(Oliver, 17-18). In this quote, Sammy talks about what it's like to be popular. I think when Sammy talks about popularity, she is very uncaring and even disrespectful to others who may not be able to afford certain items or types of things. Or even people who may not be able to have the best. The tone is set when he explains his thoughts on the topics. The way he explains any topic, he expresses his opinion, which is disrespectful. I think the author set the tone that way so as to co...... middle of the paper ......I think the author chose to change the tone so she could show the readers that people can change. Also to show readers the effect simple things or situations can have on others. Throughout the entire story, the tone set by the author will create the ending. This means that the tone set for Sammy at the beginning of the book, in which Sammy is selfish and disrespectful towards others, helps to choose how the end of the story will go. Sammy influenced Juliet's feelings; at the end of the book and throughout the story, Juliet references suicide because of the way she was treated compared to how Sammy was at the beginning and before the event, but this helps with the change in Sammy's tone. He sees what his personality was like and changes it. Works Cited Oliver, Lauren. before falling. 1st ed. New York: HarperCollinsPublisher, 2010. 0-468. Press.
