Topic > _IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES Representative Michelle Mayer introduced the following bill which was referred to the Committee on Rehabilitation Centers Act, Section One: The purpose of this bill is to create a solution to the war on drugs that is currently raging in the United States. This bill will set the guidelines for a sensible way to slowly free America from its current addiction to the use of sedatives and stimulants. Section Two: Over the years, the war on drugs has become a serious issue in American politics. Officially it wasn't a problem until the 1970s, when President Nixon tried to end rising crime rates that he thought were attributed to increased drug use, even though the first law banning narcotics was enacted in 1875. During the 1800s, drug abuse was so widespread, doctors prescribed opium, marijuana, cocaine, and heroin to treat tetanus, dysentery, fever, and migraines. Since then, the government has enacted several acts and laws in hopes of creating a better society; one without the use and need for illegal narcotics. Most people would agree that all drugs should be illegal and their possession should result in a large fine or imprisonment. However, there are some people who would vouch for the legal use of narcotics by stating that the state has nothing to do with what people do in their free time. The debate over whether recreational drugs, such as marijuana, should be legal or not is also ongoing. discussion. Some people argue that because it is not additive, there is no harm in making it legal. Others would say it's a gateway drug to more hardcore narcotics. Starting now, of course, with so many American citizens dependent on the use of one or another half-paper drug control strategy. 01 May 2013: 1-3. SIRS Government Reporter. Network.
