Looking back over the last decade the beginning of what is known as the “Harlem Renaissance” occurred. The beginning of this new movement began in Harlem, New York City, after the Great War. But the Harlem Renaissance did not just occur in Harlem, but affected all urban communities in the Northeast and Midwest of the United States. During this time many people flocked to Harlem to take part in the growing new musical genre we know as jazz. People from all over New York came to these new jazz nightclubs, the most popular of which were the Cotton Club, Connie's Inn, and Small's Paradise. The popularity of these jazz clubs stems from record companies changing from only recording white jazz bands to black jazz bands in the hope that this would bring in more revenue. Newcomers who began recording with these companies were Mamie Smith, Jelly Roll Morton, Louis Armstrong, King Oliver, Earl Hines, and Red Spikes. The new way of playing jazz during the 1920s was a more upbeat style called "Harlem Stride Style". During the 1920s he gave birth to a wave of new intellect....
