Ignorance of Fast Food is Not Happiness Every Friday night, my mother would pick me up from dance class and I would get into the car feeling tired and hungry . Most weeks I would immediately ask for a delicious "McChicken" sandwich and fries from McDonald's. At the end of a long work week, the last thing my mother wanted to do was make me dinner, so she usually hesitantly agreed. McDonald's has always been the quick and easy meal option. I could see the golden arches a mile away and the smell of fried potatoes made my mouth water. My mother and I didn't know the reality of fast food ingredients or the preparation process; so we simply purchased the food for convenience and good taste. Many people and families experience similar dilemmas during meal times. When you're walking around hungry, the familiar and always available fast food drive-thrus are tempting. However, if more people knew the ingredients and preparation of the food they were eating, many would turn away. Due to false advertising, fast food attracts people to shop, but it can be a serious detriment to their health and lead to diseases such as cancer and obesity. To prevent many of them from falling victim to the fast food market, more education should be implemented, aimed at improving young people's knowledge about advertising and the ingredients used. There should also be healthier options to compete with the fast food industry in restaurants and schools. Children are known for their naivety and easily persuasive attitudes. Fast food markets exploit this fact as they market their products to this malleable audience. According to Eric Schlosser, an acclaimed investigative journalist, children are the target of many quickly… middle of paper… less frequently, their craving and reliance on these unhealthy foods will be reduced. Advertising and the media should instead be used to promote healthy eating habits and lifestyles, as in the case of Michelle Obama: Let's move! countryside. This initiative aims to take measures to encourage children to adopt healthy habits. Michelle Obama created the "MyPlate" icon to educate and help parents make better lifestyle decisions for their children. Since launching, (Letsmove.gov) another of its programs is called Society would be much healthier if the ads now used to support the fast food or processed food industry were instead used to promote better health choices for the public . Society's ultimate goal should be to develop and encourage healthy eating habits from a young age, paying attention to what you buy and eat, thus building a healthy and stable relationship with food.
