Lincoln is a gripping film about the true events that led to the ratification of the Thirteenth Amendment and the end of the Civil War. Lincoln is directed by Steven Spielberg and Daniel Day-Lewis starred in the film as Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln is based on the book Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln by Doris Kearns Goodwin. Lincoln was nominated for twelve Academy Awards. Daniel Day-Lewis won Best Actor in a Motion Picture at the Golden Globe Awards. Despite all the positive praise for Lincoln, there was still some criticism from film critics. Film critics claimed that the film was not entirely accurate and was exaggerated. However, even historians agree that Lincoln was an inspiring film that would make people look for more information about Abraham Lincoln's life. The film Lincoln focuses on the four months of Abraham Lincoln's life before his death. Lincoln begins in January 1865. In the film, Lincoln fears that the Emancipation Proclamation will be denied by Congress once the Civil War ends. Lincoln also fears that the Thirteenth Amendment will not pass once the Southern states reunite with the Northern states. The Thirteenth Amendment concerns the freeing of slaves. Lincoln has to get some Democrats on board with the Thirteenth Amendment if he wants the Thirteenth Amendment to pass. Since the Civil War was expected to end in less than a month, Lincoln had to get to work. Lincoln's advisors advise him to wait until the new Congress is in office. However, Lincoln is firm in his belief that the Thirteenth Amendment must be passed immediately. Lincoln goes to the Republican leader, Francis Preston Blair, to use Blair's influence to get all the Republican votes. Blair tells Lincoln that for Blair to pass the Thirteenth Amendment, Blair must go and seek peace with the South. Blair's request is frustrating for Lincoln, as the radical Republicans from whom Lincoln gained votes are extremely opposed to a negotiated peace that would allow slavery. However, Lincoln needs Blair's vote, so Lincoln allows Blair to make peace with the Confederates. Next, Lincoln focuses on the “lame duck” Democratic vote. Lincoln believes that since the Democrats lost reelection, the Democrats will not aim to please the public and will vote the way they like. Lincoln can't give bribes to Democrats, so Lincoln asks people to discreetly offer federal jobs to Democrats in exchange for their vote..
