Topic > Why pay college athletes? - 643

Everyone had some sort of excitement after winning something. Nothing matters except victory without any thought of profit. There has been a debated issue recently; Should college students who play a sport be rewarded by getting paid? I believe that university athletes should not be paid for various reasons: they receive scholarships, benefits and this would create problems with university expenses. College athletes have dedicated their time and hard work to the sport they have worked so hard to be respectable in. College athletics is about heart, drive and passion to succeed in sports and life. Many college athletes' love of the game brings them to a university where they can demonstrate their talent. When you become a Division 1 player, helping your school make a profit becomes more of a passion than a job. College athletes play the game they love. For starters, paid student athletes would only create more problems for other athletes, students, and universities. Would it be difficult to distinguish who gets paid what and how universities would raise academic funds? The funds that could go to academics would be scarce if athletes were paid. There would be no money left over for schools to receive tutoring, hire better teachers, or acquire updated technology. In reality, not all universities can afford to pay athletes. Some sports teams may need to be cut so the university can have enough money to pay for popular teams. As a result, cutting sports teams will limit student-athletes' opportunities to join sports teams. Additionally, there are benefits that student-players already receive, such as scholarships and other aid from their school. The scholarship counts…middle of the paper…asking to get an education beyond sports; while professionals focus only on their sport. I believe that university athletes should not be paid for various reasons: they receive scholarships, benefits and this would create problems with university expenses. Paying student athletes would create major problems that universities could address. It could lead to athletic departments becoming more of a business instead of helping athletes get an education. Student athletes have more passion for their sport because they fight to play it. Spectators love college athletes because they play for the school and not for the money. Paying college athletes to play might benefit the players, but it would only create more problems for other athletes, students and universities. The innocence of college sports would be taken away if college athletes were paid.
