John Bowlby says that babies who cry, talk or smile seek nourishment, pick them up and make them feel safe, talk back to them to show their importance and smile to get a smile back. (Bukatko, 2008) Again in an article for Developmental Psychology, the author refers to an observation that Freud said in 1920/1955: “As long as we follow development from its final outcome backwards, the chain of events appears continuous, and we believe we have acquired a completely satisfactory or even exhaustive vision." (Bretherton, 1992, p. 2) It is what she sees as a “retrospective developmental approach to the origins of attachment theory.” (Bretherton, 1992, p. 2) Having good memories and a sense of security is a precious thing, I'm sure I have had good memories, but they are darkened.
