Topic > Imagine: The Song of the Past and Present - 850

John Lennon's song Imagine is about how he imagined a utopian society where there are no prejudices and only equality; there are no wars but only peace. Lennon dreamed of a society that was one and worked together as one, and he wasn't the only dreamer who wanted this reality. However the issues mentioned in the lyrics did not only apply to the 1980s when the song was produced; it applies to all of human history and will also apply to future events. The era in which the song was produced gave the population insight into the culture, political affairs, and social issues of the time, but these issues can still be applied to today's generations. The 80's era was full of culture in music being produced. The songs of the time were imbued with thoughts and meanings of peace, justice, equality and the desire for change. The era of the hippie movement began in the mid-1960s and continued until the 1980s, but then soon died out as many mixed with the materialistic culture. This was also the era when excessive drug use was common and led many to become nonconformists and rebel against the government. Partly because these drugs were so readily available, musical artists were highly aware of these narcotics and “affecting” their lyrical talent. Lennon, as well as the rest of the Beatles, had their own experiences with drugs and they inherently influenced the meaning of their lyrics. They often spoke of finding peace in a dream world that, in the ordinary citizen's belief, did not exist on Earth, when in reality their world was at war. The Cold War began in 1947 when Joseph Stalin rose up and created the communist authoritarian country of modern Russia. It reflected his ideal way of life in... middle of paper... what he produced gave citizens information about the culture, political affairs and social issues of the time, but these issues are still a big problem today and they're only getting worse.
