Patients as well as providers are unaware of hospital costs related to the services they provide. Greater transparency of acute care hospital costs and utilization data is needed to enable more cost-effective care. There are many opportunities to improve the efficiency and quality of inpatient hospital care. Hospitals should look to expand more services for extended hours, explore practice use, and implement alternative medical staffing models to facilitate high-quality care that is more efficient. There are no financial incentives to coordinate care or ensure patients have access to ongoing care once they leave the hospital. There is a need to develop and implement guidelines and financial incentives to improve care coordination at all levels when talking in terms of health services. The patient may be less expensive, but finding insurance to cover these specialty doctors will become another matter
