Throughout Catcher in the Rye Holden puts himself in very stressful situations. His personality type puts him in these situations. Holden has friends who cause trouble because he thinks almost everyone is fake. The pressure created by having no friends and being able to feel comfortable at school forced him to drop out: “One of the main reasons I left Elkton Hills was because I was surrounded by fakes. That's all...For example, they had this principal, Mr. Haas, who was the most phony bastard I've ever met in my life” (Salinger 13) this not only forced him to leave school but also end up on the streets . The song “Under Pressure” by Queen fits perfectly with the theme that the pressure Holden has created on himself has forced him to the edge of sanity. In the song, one of the recurring lines is “puts people out on the street” (Queen) referring to the pressure. This song ties in perfectly with this theme. The best way to describe Holden is a basket case: he exaggerates almost everything and is a little paranoid when it comes to what happened to Stradlater and Jane. These and the fact that he is telling his story from a mental hospital lead me to believe he is crazy. Green Day's "Basket Case" fits Holden's personality type, including the lyrics about being "melodramatic" meaning overly dramatic. The song also involves the songwriter trying to solve his problems "I went to a shrink... I went to a whore" (Green Day), both of which Holden tried to use to solve his problems. Holden tried not to accept the fact that he was crazy and didn't like going to a shrink or a prostitute, but when he was really down he broke down: "It was against my principles and everything, but I felt so depressed I didn't even think . That's all... middle of paper... out of their “loved ones”. After Holden was expelled from school he had two options, go back home or go live on his own in the city which he would have to face loneliness and constant reminders of home, which began already during the packing stages after his departure As he was packing his bags he became quite sad: “I could see my mother going to Spaulding and doing to the seller a million stupid [sic] questions - and here I am getting the ax again. Made me feel quite sad” (Salinger), this is one of the problems of choosing to live alone rather than go home." Boulevard Of Broken Dreams" by Green Day represents the long, lonely nights he will have to face alone. In the song the lyrics, "I walk a lonely road, the only one I've ever known... I walk a long way", (Green Day), which describes what Holden does, persevering, through the bumpy road of depression and loneliness.
