In the short story “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings”, there are three main characters; The Old Man, Pelayo and Elisenda. During a thunderstorm, Pelayo notices an old homeless man who had enormous wings. Pelayo and his wife Elisenda decided that the old man was an angel who planned to take their newborn son to heaven because he was ill. Afterwards she went to her neighbor, who told Pelayo that she thinks the Old Man is a corner, however she is very suspicious. He then tells Pelayo to kill the homeless man, Pelayo decides not to because his son was getting better. Pelayo, being kind in the relationship, convinces Elisenda to let the angel stay in the henhouse. Even though a chicken coop isn't a good living space, it's better than living on the streets and being dead. When this happens, people begin to visit the chicken coop. The local parish priest Father Gonzaga also comes to visit. Father Gonzaga states that Man cannot be an angel because he does not speak Latin. Even though Father Gonzaga tells people that this Man was no angel, the crowd continues to grow. Elisenda already thinks that the Old Man is a nuisance and notices that the number of people visiting the Old Man is growing, so she starts charging people for admission. Although the numbers are overwhelming, the Old Man ignores them. People began to pluck the feathers from his wings. However, when word spread about Spider Woman, those same people grew tired of the Old Man and went to see Spider Woman. Pelayo and Elisenda became rich thanks to the admission fees. Pelayo quit his job and built a new, bigger house. The Old Man lived with the family for several years afterward. Obviously Pelayo and Elisenda think that the Old Man will die sooner or later... middle of paper... it's like religion, magical realism, being abnormal, and forgiveness tells us that this story is for adults. The way he ends the story always makes you wonder: why was the Old Man there? Works Cited “Bible Gateway.” Bible Door. Np, nd Web.
