Poems can say many things, mean many things and represent many things. You may read a poem, think that it is about flowers in a field, but if you look at it from a deeper perspective, it may talk about someone's depression or some problem that the author wants to address. There can also be many other issues or ideas discussed in a simple line of poetry, depending on how you approach it. The poem Dante's Inferno is a poem that describes Dante's journey through hell. It describes hell in nine different circles, all with different punishments for different sins. For example, if you killed your neighbor, you would drown in a pool of blood for eternity. However, the particular passage that will be discussed is the “Standing” passage in canto twenty-four. This piece of the poem is divided into four stanzas: “'Stand up! This is no time to get tired!' / cried my Master. «The sleeping man / will never wake fame and his desire, and his whole life passes him like a dream, / and the traces of his memory fade from time / like smoke in the air, or ripples in a stream. —Now then get up. Control your breathing and call upon / the soul strength that wins all battles / unless you sink in the fall of the gross body. — There is still a longer ladder to climb: / this is not enough. If you understand me, / it shows that you intend to profit from your time. (Page 207, lines 46-57). This passage, as you can see, contains many messages contained in this poem. The song “Standing” from Dante's Inferno contains three specific messages: never give up, when you start something you always finish and finally if you don't try you won't succeed. To begin, an important message from “Standing” from Dante's Inferno in Standing” is that you should never give up no…… middle of paper……, the “standing” passage from Dante's Inferno contains three messages: do not never give up, never give up start something unless you intend to finish it, and ultimately you will never succeed if you don't try. The first message discussed was that you can never give up; Virgil was trying to motivate Dante to continue their journey because Dante was preparing to give up. The next message was: Don't start something unless you intend to finish it. Dante began this journey and Virgil would make sure to end that unpleasant journey. The last message discussed was that if you never try, you will never succeed. If Dante had not tried to complete the rest of their journey, he would never have succeeded, nor would he have achieved what he desired. Many messages can be shown through a poem and there is a huge variety of messages we can find.
