Leadership is essentially the ability to motivate. An effective leader can motivate others to achieve a common goal. Leaders are different from managers in that they inspire others to do the necessary work while managers generally tend to handle the tasks associated with completing the goal. - In my personal experience, I have been both a leader and a manager in my professional life and I find that leading can be difficult. Inspiring others to get on the same page and work together towards the same goal has its challenges. It is much easier to manage the actual tasks associated with the project or goal than to get buy-in from others to complete those tasks. - A very strong, yet controversial individual who has been used as a prime example of effective leader is Adolf Hitler. Although the things he made his armies do were despicable, he was able to motivate, create a sense of belonging among the armies, and instill a strong sense of urgency in believing in his vision. Lead by example: Effective leaders know they are always being watched and are comfortable being held up as a role model. Intervening where necessary, being an active part of the team, demonstrating expected values and characteristics, and actually doing the work others have done to understand it are all aspects of leading by example (Yoskovitz, 2007). - One experience I had leading by example was when I was given a position in a middle management role to mentor others who had actually been doing the job longer than me. In order to earn respect and be able to lead effectively, I had to “get my hands dirty.” I spent a lot of time with each employee to find out what they did, how long they had been doing it, and the pain points they encountered... middle of the paper... in the decision making process to assist someone with becoming more technically proficient in those aspects of the job that individual who may require them to use decision making with their employees as well as problem solving with challenges that may arise along the path to achieving goals. Strengthening skills is a matter of both professional and personal development. Pursuing and practicing leadership skills in any field, such as administration and finance, will contribute to the continued development of the technical skills needed for positions, as well as the skills needed to be an effective role model and motivator.- Some elements of one plan I would perhaps commit to is internal training courses covering effective listening, communication and organisation, as well as external workshops, courses and readings to continue to develop both professionally and personally.
