The artifact I chose for my analyst is the film Pain and Gain directed by Michael Bay. This film is based on true events that occurred in Miami in the mid-1990s. The main character, Danny Lugo, is a personal trainer whose life revolves around physical fitness. During his employment at Sunshine Gym, he met Adrian Doorbal, a fellow personal trainer. The two realize that their hard work in the gym has led to big muscles and empty pockets. Lugo soon covets the earnings and lifestyle achieved by a new gym member who begins training: Victor Kershaw, who Lugo believes is a scammer. Inspired by motivational speaker Johnny Wu, Lugo decides to be an "agent" and hatches a plan to extort Kershaw's assets by kidnapping and torturing him. Lugo and Doorbal quickly realize they need a third member to complete a job of this magnitude and recruit Paul Doyle, a recently released cocaine-addicted inmate who has turned to religion. The three-man crew, nicknamed the Sunshine Gang, successfully kidnapped Victor Kershaw and extorted his assets. The crew then attempted to kill Kershaw but was unsuccessful. When Kershaw informed law enforcement about what happened, they believed the story was too far-fetched to be true. It seems the Sunshine gang got away with all the crimes they committed against Kershaw. It wasn't long before their money ran out and they had to look for another success to continue their new lifestyle. The crew then decides to take down a wealthy businessman named Frank Grigas. During this second heist, the three men kill Frank and his wife and dump their dismembered bodies in the Everglades. Law enforcement soon came across the Sunshine gang and made the arrest. Lugo and Doorbal were convicted and sentenced to death for the murders... middle of paper... bad behavior because the actor is following a higher calling. Lugo's highest calling is his responsibility to be a true American, a patriot, and to take on people he deems unfit to have nice things. Danny Lugo and the Sunshine gang were tired of being nobody's and the have-nots. For Lugo and Doorbal, a life dedicated to the gym has left them with no real results. They justified the kidnapping and torture of Victor Kershaw by believing they deserved his wealth more than him. They didn't try to find an alternative to the American dream, they simply saw someone living it and thought he wasn't worthy of it. Paul Doyle is dragged into this enterprise, but not because he believed Kershaw didn't deserve his life. Doyle was thrust into the situation by Lugo, Lugo was blinded by his corrupt vision of the American dream and would do whatever it took to live it.
