Pakistani society has always been conservative and traditional; one who often vehemently opposes any new ideal or proposal that even remotely challenges society's status quo. One such issue, which is gaining prominence – and eliciting often violent reactions in the process – is the controversial issue of sex education. In Pakistan's conservative society, sex tops the list of topics that are largely avoided and considered taboo. Globalization, which has led to widespread dominance of Western culture and promoted freedom of speech and expression, has proved instrumental in breaking this age-old taboo and inciting the controversial debate over sex education in Pakistan. This often leads to immature and unwise decisions regarding one's sex life and well-being. Even after puberty, lack of knowledge about sexual matters can be quite harmful, sometimes even fatal. There is no denying the value of professional and age-appropriate sexuality education, in line with cultural and religious values, since all it does is impart the necessary knowledge to young people in an appropriate manner, giving them the opportunity to take wiser decisions and lead a healthier life. Refusing to recognize the need for such vital education will only serve to exacerbate the various issues plaguing our society.
