In this novel Roxanne is a famous soprano opera singer from Chicago. Bel Canto, one of the main characters I chose to study was Roxane Coss. Roxanne is a famous soprano opera singer from Chicago. I chose her because I believe she is one of the few main characters who made the biggest change in values throughout the novel. The tenor/vehicle I used for Roxane is “A diva is a jeweled scarf, rich but soft and flowing.” I chose a diva as a tenor because it sums up Roxane's personality as a character throughout the novel. I chose the jeweled scarf with the birds on it because it gives readers a physical object that is used as insight into her character. Roxane has gone through many changes in her values. He conveyed his three values of image, peace, and love throughout the novel. She started out being a self-centered diva, to face a major reality check. Roxane conveyed the value of her image in the opening scene of the novel. In the beginning, it shows how Roxane was very self-centered and didn't care about anyone's feelings but herself. When the hostages believed they would be killed, Roxane had the courage to say that she didn't believe it could happen to her. “There were those who believed they would be killed, but Roxane Coss thought no such thing. Maybe the outcome would have been bad for some of the others, but no one would have shot a soprano. (Page 33) Later in the scene Roxane's companion became seriously ill. Roxane said that he bothered her and that she never wanted to be bothered with him. “The truth was that he had hated the chaperone a bit.” (Page 79)I think Roxane's value of only caring about one's image is very accurate. She only cared about herself and did her best to protect her… middle of paper… the entire novel, but it really showed in the epilogue. This final scene came as a shock to all readers. The reason for this is that usually in a novel an epilogue is inserted to wrap things up. In this case it left many questions unanswered. Even though the epilogue was shocking to most readers, it still shows that Roxanne has made a dramatic change within herself by the end of the book. At the beginning of the book it only showed that Roxanne cared about her image. Now that the book has come to an end, it shows that he appreciates peace and love. This final scene is comparable to the symbol of the Soap Opera. Soap operas symbolize the unifying power of art. Art connects people by expressing shared feelings of love and loss. Gen and Roxane are linked through marriage to express the shared feelings of their love for each other and the loss of their deceased lovers..
