His motto for working with students is “the kids are my business.” She made sure to convey that her business and work within the school is planned around the students. Ms. Harmon described her day-to-day work as a consultant as unpredictable. He said he usually spends time each day answering emails and phone calls and calling universities and community organizations. She said she focuses more on the academic portion of counseling and, depending on the level of severity, may refer a student to the school social worker for social-emotional counseling. He said 70% of his time is spent evaluating students' academic, personal, social and career aspects, while the remaining 30% is used to focus on students' social-emotional issues. While speaking with her, I noticed that many students were in and out of her office for various reasons; some of the reasons included students seeking bus passes, scholarships, candy, clarity on course requirements, and informing her of problems among students enrolled at King. I noticed that students referred to Mrs. Harmon as their mom at school. She had an open-door policy and was available to any student who needed her, even while I was interviewing her. Ms. Harmon explained that she has 400 students (freshmen, sophomores, juniors, seniors) that she supports throughout the course
