The National Institute of Child Health and Development Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development (NICHD SECCYD) uses this model to provide insight into success in reading and math, as well as socio-emotional competence, through considering the support of material status and “maternal and paternal psychological functioning” and how it affects children. A NICHD SEYCCD study produced two sets of findings on children transitioning to school in a situation where the father lived with the family, investigating the direct and indirect influences of fathers on children in transition. The first study on 648 families showed that children aged 4 and a half to 7-8 year olds had fathers who were more sensitive and more autonomous with respect to the mother-child relationship. Teachers also reported that children with parents who had an intimate marriage had fewer internalizing problems, as well as teachers rated the child's social adjustment to be greater when the father reported greater spousal support. The second group of longitudinal research presented results from 4 and a half years to 8-9 years, observing the sensitive support of mothers and fathers towards children's autonomy.
