There are many different reasons why we need male teachers in society today. They face advantages and disadvantages. Some of these male teachers feel the need, or desire, to mentor these young boys. Female educators are important, but male educators are equally important in ways not possible for a woman. Both male and female teachers provide education where the other sex is weaker. Therefore, it is crucial that young people are exposed to both in educational environments. Being a male educator has many advantages. The biggest advantage of being a male teacher would be complacency. Male teachers have the need or desire to want to shape the minds of the students they teach. Knowing that they are making a difference is also a benefit in itself. “This shows that a job in a primary school is not only fulfilling, but can also be a new start for men pursuing careers they don't like.” (Nathan Forman). Male teachers also face positive discrimination because they are men and will easily get a job as teachers. Many say that men have the advantage of attending elementary schools also because they can receive more promotions. With a low percentage of male elementary school teachers, most administrators hire men to fill positions. Many see male teachers as role models for students. There are two organizations that encourage and recruit boys to attend early education; the National Education Association (NEA) and Menteach.org. However, in addition to the advantages of being a male teacher, there are also disadvantages. There are three main disadvantages to being a male teacher: the pay, the negative effects of the surrounding society, and being considered a child molester or a homosexual…halfway…happy. With the gender difference, both male and female teachers' exposure to the youth of society is crucial, and male teachers are just as important as women in the educational field.
