Life is an ever-changing structure as beings naturally grow to new levels. The development of respective physical and mental abilities is an important aspect for humans. People typically form in a cycle accustomed to their specific cultural norm, through the evolutionary approach. However, there is a large portion of the population that deviates from the average development of a person. Deviations can form from many different ranges of physical and mental disabilities. By studying disabilities, researchers have been able to identify the characteristics, cause, diagnosis, intervention, and treatment for those with different needs. A learning disability is a neurological disorder that causes the individual to seek additional assistance to reach their full potential. When a child is diagnosed with a learning disability, the child's life is altered from the original plan his parents had for him. The family of the child with learning difficulties must adapt to meet the needs of the child or sibling. There is a difference between mothers and fathers as they take on their new life. No one expects their loved one to have a disability but through natural and formal support the individual can have a full life that matches their developmental level. It is a difficult time of adjustment for the child, but the family also feels the impact of the child's new life. There are phases that a family goes through when coming to terms with this adjustment. The family must take on new supportive roles by working with the child's community and school to accommodate the child's unique strengths. Everyone involved must take on more responsibility while maintaining the family structure. Disabilities have an attack...... middle of paper...... the performance of the child as the parent finally accepts the abilities of the son or daughter. Families must constantly encourage children to learn even when they face adversity. The family also needs to be self-aware because working with a learning disability can be taxing. Parents are responsible for their other children, work and home maintenance. It is important for the family to seek help from other sources of support. Fortunately, when a child has a learning disability, the family is not alone because the school is also forced to work to meet the child's needs. The family works with the school to create an Individualized Education Plan (IEP). It is a single contract that all parties agree upon as they strive to achieve established goals. The child's abilities are evaluated annually to ensure the IEP is working properly for all members. (NLCD, 2013)
