Topic > Bechdel Test Analysis: A Social-Historical Approach

In my opinion, there are three specific criteria that make a film great. First of all, a great film always has great actors. For example, in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Jack Nicholson and Danny DeVito are famous actors who played a major role in this film and would not have been the same without them. Additionally, a great film always has a powerful opening that conveys crucial patterns to foreshadow later events in the film. I felt that One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest lacked this aspect in the opening scene. All that is shown is a beautiful landscape with a mountain in the background, while the viewer sees a car passing by. This scene doesn't really convey the significant patterns that follow in the film. Finally, a great film always has a hero with a moral problem. These types of films reveal a unique and significant side to the heroes that gives them the strength to prevail at the end of the film. Additionally, these films have a hero who tries to ignore a major problem or goal that helps drive the film's story. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest fits this criteria perfectly. McMurphy, the so-called hero of this film, wanted to make the people in the mental institution feel like they were normal. McMurphy constantly helped the group feel like men again by doing manly things with them, such as playing cards, drinking alcohol, going fishing, and playing games..
