“Surrogacy is less regulated in the United States than the sale of used cars” (Humphreys). Surrogacy has been around for many years and is becoming more and more public in today's society. The most technical way to describe a “complete” surrogate transaction would be as follows: “the implantation of an embryo created using eggs and sperm or both intended parents…” (Arnold). This in turn would mean that the carrier mother would have no genetic link to the child. This also allows the parents of the transported child to have a full genetic connection with the child, making the entire family unit much stronger. Surrogacy is a gateway for couples who wish to have a child with their own genetic and personality characteristics, especially for couples who are physically unable to have the child. The surrogate mother will most likely receive a significant sum of money for this task. In some cases, a surrogate mother is used because the recipient mother cannot use her own womb as she may not possess a uterus, which in turn would totally prevent the said women from conceiving their child (Malpani and Malpani). As unfortunate as this situation is, women around the world have many different reasons for not being able to conceive and/or carry their children. It is very common for women to be unable to give birth on their own, due to new developments in medicine and also developments in genetics. This alternative way of bringing life into the world has been used for hundreds of years. But the first to be recorded in this lifetime was a 1976 agreement (“Definition of Surrogacy”).
