How can this be done? All we have to do is think about what employers are looking for and try to meet those standards to the best of our ability. (Carnagie, D., 1990) The presentation at the job fair I attended made me realize the importance of extracurricular activities, as they play a very important role in transforming a CV from mundane to interesting. In addition to dedicating themselves to their studies and taking part in as many projects as possible, especially if they involve presentations and simulations, students should invest some of their downtime in extracurricular activities such as voluntary or part-time work and international internships, which have proven highly valued by most employers. Most graduates who opt for international internships find the first few weeks very difficult, as working abroad can be a traumatic experience. However, in doing so, they show themselves to be bold, mature, flexible and motivated – all qualities highly valued by employers. For me, I have always found the world of business very fascinating and if there is one thing that fascinates me they have learned, that is that business is not just a matter of theory. Back in China, I worked as an assistant lawyer, helping him organize his daily activities and translating for him from Chinese to English and vice versa. After that, I helped a friend of mine who ran a shop in Da Shang Hai and learned how to approach customers and improve my sales skills. That experience made me realize that I have potential for sales jobs, as I am a very sociable person who loves interacting with people. When it comes to small businesses, the relationship between employer work and employee is close and, at times, familiar and I believe that this factor plays a very important role in the success of a company, especially considering that small entrepreneurs know how to achieve employee satisfaction for the simple fact that they can easily manage its human resources and monitor the progress of each employee in order to reward or penalize them. These are the reasons why I am interested in small business development and would like to gain experience within a medium-sized organization, to better understand the dynamics of small businesses. Personally I would like to enter the UK job market by getting a job as a salesperson, perhaps in a clothing store, so that I can gain more professional experience during my studies. The best way to find work is to participate in job fairs and recruiting fairs, since they usually have many companies represented that are willing to hire new employees.8) In light of the above reflections, I will put my findings into practice to become more employable.
