IndexWhat is the cause or reason for overfishing? At what rate will we have overexploited if we haven't already? What solutions are there to this problem? Conclusion Overfishing is not only the topic of the essay, but a major current global problem that is occurring in all the world's seas. Since fishing is one of my hobbies, I often go to catch a fish and lately I have noticed that every time I go there are fewer and fewer fish and they are getting progressively smaller. I chose this topic because in my opinion overfishing is a big problem that people overlook and has a big effect on many people. I will look at three questions related to this problem. These questions will help me understand what the real reason for overfishing is, how quickly it is happening, and what we can do to fix the problem. I chose this question because it will help me fully understand the cause of the problem, not just the effect it has. According to the article “Environmental Issues” by Earth Times it is shown that fishing fleets (fishing vessels) around the world are 5 times larger than what is actually needed to fish in the ocean, in fact fishing fleets have the capacity to cover 4 planets that are the size of the earth and another reason for overfishing is that these already oversized fleets use illegal and unsustainable fishing methods to transport the fish.” To me these facts are shocking and worrying because it doesn't seem like people are doing anything to eat less fish and commercial fishermen certainly don't seem willing to stop or cut back. I think commercial fishing companies using fleets 5 times oversized is really pointless considering they are not oversized and have the capacity to cover 4 times what is actually needed and in my opinion something needs to be changed in order to stop or reduce this problem. There are a few solutions to try and reduce the problem and the first would be to try to enforce laws banning large fleets, heavy fines and punishments for exceeding limits and dumping fish and also banning fishing methods illegal and the imposition of fines and punishments if caught using methods. These solutions would be ideal but to be honest, they are out of our control considering they are legal laws and should be implemented by the authorities, but there are things we can do to help reduce overfishing, these are; reduce the consumption of fish in our diets or boycott the purchase of endangered species, this would lead to commercial fishing companies overproducing and not selling, which would hopefully cause them to stop or reduce the amount they catch. The second reason for overfishing comes from the website called World Ocean Review an article titled Causes of Overfishing. According to the article it says: 'There are economic incentives for overfishing. The economic cost of fishing is underestimated and this leads to the capture of a greater quantity of fish than is economically and environmentally reasonable, furthermore there is a strong incentive for individual fishermen to make efforts to increase personal earnings.
