As part of their CSR (corporate social responsibility) activities, they have a strong code of conduct since 1997 which works with social and environmental requirements applicable to all products, transport and sales in the supply chain and design programs for sustainability. H&M defines corporate standards and objectives, develops environmentally and socially responsible policies and develops sustainability strategies in line with corporate objectives. It also monitors total compliance, measures results and publishes the report. Sustainability is achieved by balancing profit, planet and people. Over the past 5 years they have spent $4 to $5 million engaging and educating customers and employees about the rights of children in cotton production. They have a strong code of conduct and sign the code as a premise before any business relationship. Comprehensive audit programs have also been underway since 2005. The audit results complement the purchasing decision. Until 2010 there were 2,561 audits (59% unannounced).
