Topic > Ralph as a leader in Lord of the Flies by William Golding

In the famous novel titled “Lord of the Flies”, there are four main characters that William Golding built to represent the typical personalities of human nature. While Jack represents ferocity with powerful instincts, Simon represents natural kindness and Piggy with his glasses is the symbol of wisdom, Ralph has the best behaviors of a true leader as he was initially voted leader. There are three main characteristics that mark him as a happy leader: rational, moral and unshakable. First of all, the most important characteristic that makes Ralph the best leader is his rational mind. Personally I think a leader should be a respectable and organized person. Ralph demonstrates his leadership ability very well in the way he treats children. He said: “We can't have everyone talking at once. We will do 'Hands up' like at school” (33). Ralph apparently has a democratic vision of government: he wants everyone to have the chance to speak out. By saying this, Ralph built a good image of himself to make others willingly support him. “Ralph held out the glittering shell and Maurice took it obediently” (88). As a result, the kids actually respect Ralph the same way he respects them. Ralph was very clever in his early strategy of gradually building his reputation and yet order into his authority. “We will have rules!” “So many rules!” (33) He evidently wants to keep the kids as a united community to work effectively. Ralph knows that the anarchy will separate them and decrease their chances of being rescued. It imposes rules and regulations to maintain order as it is the most essential basis of a community. The other point I want to mention is that Ralph knows what the priority is. “So we need shelters as a kind of_” “Home” (52). Ralph expresses... in the middle of the paper ......in a frank way for Jack he is the boss, Ralph shows that he would never give up to lose the respect of the boys. I believe that even when the boys did not return to Ralph (perhaps due to Jack and Roger's powerful control) they could slightly see his assertive self-assertion. Obviously, a leader cannot be cowardly. In conclusion, Ralph is a great combination of Piggy, Simon and Jack, which makes him the most appropriate leader among all the boys. Ralph is rational and intelligent in the way he creates and organizes his authority. He has the morality and sensitivity to maintain justice in his group and treat them fairly. He is courageous and faithful in every situation. To compare Ralph to all the other three characters, I would absolutely vote Ralph as leader if I were stuck on the island with him because of his exceptional and skilled leadership skills..
