Topic > Expo 2020 in Dubai: 'Connecting Minds, Creation...

World Expos represent a meeting point for people from all over the world, where innovative ideas are shared and improved on issues of international importance, such as the global economy or even an improvement in the lives of the world population. Expo 2020, which will be held in the heart of Dubai, will represent a big step towards efficient development. The Expo will be held under the banner of "Connecting Minds, Creating the Future". Their goal is to connect people and innovative ideas, leading the world's people towards a better tomorrow. The Expo can have a huge effect on a country and its people, but it also has some downsides. Many employees in Dubai have a different opinion on how Expo 2020 could affect the country. Abdulla Al Majeed, currently employed at Etisalat, says the Expo has its pros and cons. An advantage is that Dubai will have many foreign visitors, which will make the economy flourish dramatically. Dubai will have around 25 million visitors; so Dubai will earn a large amount of money from all these visitors. Another benefit is that it will create around 270,000 new jobs in Dubai, as stated by the Dubai government. While the Expo may be beneficial, one disadvantage is that traffic in Dubai will increase significantly. Since 25 million people will visit Dubai, all the streets will be full of people. Mohammad Wael, head of Obaidulla Contracting, gave up some of his free time to answer a couple of my questions. He said the last couple of years have been tough for engineers in general. The workload they received was much less than what engineers are used to, but due to Expo 2020, things have changed. Because of the Expo, new hotels, houses, roads and everything an engineer is responsible for will be built. The only disadvantage he can think of is that, since there will be many new houses and hotels, and since they will be built for visitors, after the end of the Expo, there will not be enough people to occupy all these houses. It is true that there will be large numbers of people moving to live in Dubai, but the numbers will not be equivalent to the number of visitors.
