The conflicts of recent centuries have been dominated by the West. The two world wars and the subsequent Cold War were dominated by Western states and ideals. It is speculated that with the collapse of the USSR and the end of the Cold War, the conflict of the West subsided and conflicts of other nations and factions emerged. As the bipolar world system became unipolar, other issues emerged or took over, the economy returned to the world economy, technology advanced at a rapid pace completely changing the way wars and America has pursued its goal of democratization. America has become the dominant superpower. in 1989, when the world entered a unipolar system; thus changing the country's foreign policy. Instead of fighting the “evil empire” (Reagan: 1983), foreign policy has turned to protecting international stability and leading a global movement for democracy. This policy has painted some characters, probably rightly, as modern Hitlers. Saddam Hussein, Colonel Gaddafi and Hosni Mubarak witnessed this treatment, even claiming to form a 'new world order' (Carpenter: 1991: 24). It has been seen that the United States has become the world police. This has created anger among many Arab states as the United States attempts to impose democracy on the countries with mixed results; Grenada and Panama were successful, while Lebanon and Iraq proved costly, in terms of money and lives, and prevented the establishment of an effective democracy. Lebanon saw 250 American casualties while Iraq saw 4,483. (iCasualties.org:2011) This shift in conflict was caused by the near-global acceptance of democracy and the lack of a significant adversary to challenge the United States.
