Topic > The Process of Acquiring Knowledge - 1148

The overall essence of education or acquiring knowledge is reflected in an axiom of Confucius that says “Tell me and I will forget; show it to me and I will remember; but involve me and I will understand. It was clear then that learning was a global process involving passionate exchanges between students and their teachers; unfortunately this is not the case in most modern classrooms. Instead of the expected two-way communication between students and teachers, in the modern learning environment there exists a one-way system that involves the teacher incessantly throwing facts at students who, due to their passive role as mere receptacles, have fallen asleep or fallen asleep; in the case of the “best”, students take notes without thinking. This leads to a situation where knowledge has been neither conferred nor acquired. However, the damage doesn't stop there, in classrooms where students are not asleep students usually develop a despondent and less engaging nature towards learning. Students are convinced that the appropriate way to learn is through teacher interventions, which undoubtedly leads to over-reliance on teachers. Relying on professors is not necessarily a detriment, but when it prevents students from seeking knowledge independently it turns them into superficial students lacking depth of understanding. Unfortunately, there are no quick fixes to the problems plaguing modern classrooms; there are only temporary solutions and remedies that may be helpful in mitigating the problem until a more permanent solution is achieved. These remedies constitute my personal teaching philosophy. One such remedy is to instruct students in the act of metacognition, st...... middle of paper ......one, so each group member plays an active role in completing the task. Additionally, the project must include intellectually dense, multiple-answer, divergent questions and also include questions that encourage critical thinking skills. Having the freedom to think without the constraints of having to provide a single precise answer will give students the confidence to think differently, show their creativity and work at their own pace. This leads to a more complete and in-depth response which would encourage longer retention of information. This is a positive alternative for students because instead of having to stay up all night studying for exams, only to forget the information as soon as the test is over. Students can finally gain knowledge that they can keep forever or; at least for a longer period of time.
