Privacy Issues in Social Media Social media is a current way that people interact with each other on a daily basis. Since the launch of various social networking sites (SNS), a new way of sharing information with others and corresponding to the interests of one's choice in many different forms has been a great attraction. Although social media sites allow users to share information with friends and other sites on the Internet, many people are unaware of how their privacy is disclosed. Now that the expansion of global connection through these social media sites is so present in today's society, giving us easy access to information, the lack of privacy is decreasing. People's privacy rights are exploited every day and the government should therefore implement more laws to avoid violating users. This is affecting countless online users and is a problem because unwanted personal information could leak out. Depending on two different sources, the history of first launching social networking sites is different. “By the above definition, the first recognizable social networking site launched in 1997. SixDegrees.com allowed users to create profiles, list their friends, and, starting in 1998, browse friend lists.”( qtd. in Boyd, Ellison) On On the other hand, a timeline view of history shows that in 1969 "CompuServe was the first major provider of commercial Internet services to the public in the United States..." In 1971 "the first email". I agree that the first step towards the whole explosion started with email. Through email, people primarily communicated with each other through the Internet and had the ability to use short message service (SMS) to be… at the heart of the paper…ildrens Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) .” (Loeffler 2012) It was also shown that state laws were very minimal and there may even be states that contain no specific privacy and information security laws. Two states that have enacted privacy and information security laws were California and Massachusetts, where state attorneys general got involved. “California law requires operators of commercial websites that collect personal information from California residents to post a privacy policy that identifies the types of personal information collected.” (Loeffler 2012) This discloses personal information from third parties who request information from users. In these states, applicable laws would also be relevant to state consumer protection laws. Therefore, consumer protection laws prohibit companies from carrying out unfair or defective acts.
