The Middle AgesImagine having to bury your own children. How terrible would that be? The Middle Ages were a brutal time that included the bubonic plague, many wars, and other horrible things. This period is considered that of religion and the Catholic Church, but it was overshadowed by chaos and confusion. Although the Middle Ages are often known as the Age of Faith, a more appropriate title for that time period would be the Dark Ages due to the Black Death, wars, and collapse of government. The Black Death caused intense suffering and many problems throughout Europe. . According to the book The Black Plague, the Black Death began when a twenty-five-year-old man skinned a diseased bobcat. “A few days later, the farmer began to feel ill. He suffered from headaches, chills, fever and then nausea. He vomited several times. About five days after skinning the bobcat, he noticed a baseball-sized swelling under his left armpit and became concerned” (Page 1). The Black Death, also known as the Bubonic Plague, killed a third of the population, or 25 million people. So many people have died and it has become a common thing to see another person suffer. As Agnolo di Tura from Siena says “It seemed that almost everyone was amazed to see the pain. And it is impossible for the human language to tell the terrible truth” (doc 11). As this quote shows, many people suffered from the plague. The plague cost millions of lives. As stated in the book Life During the Black Death, “famines, wars, and a variety of deadly diseases claimed the lives of millions during the 1300s, but the worst calamity to devastate this troubled century was the Black Death” (page 8). As this quote shows, the Black Death killed many more people than... middle of paper... in the church, so many that they were willing to dedicate their entire lives to it. Although this period saw an increase in the influence of the church, this reflected the need for people to find comfort against the hardships of disease, war, and the chaos resulting from the collapse of government. Dark Ages is a better name for the Middle Ages than the Age of Faith due to the Black Death, numerous wars, and the collapse of the government system. The Black Death caused death, intense suffering, and caused many problems throughout Europe. Wars, attacks and invasions were common during the Middle Ages. finally, the government system collapsed. Although many sought solace in the church, given the prevalence of death, suffering and chaos, I believe the Middle Ages would be a more appropriate description of these times as there were more disasters than anything else in the Middle Ages..
